Organization is the key to every house. With organization, you create more space. More space to fill your house with more eye-catching soft furnishings - maybe nice cushion covers, or a glass coffee table - minimalism! One thing that is lacking organization in our house is the closet space. We have two small closets in the house, both with very small short clothing racks and a deep crawl space. We want to maximize the closet space by putting in shelves for tools and nick knack storages, and additional clothes rail for more hanging space. Also, we will be putting shelving units in each of the closet to make it tidier and easier to find items. This is a bigger and more difficult project because the crawl spaces are shorter in length than most conventional closet shelves that you buy in store. A lot of the shelves, rods, and storage units will have to be made to custom fit this tight space. We are trying to be creative by using shower curtain or window curtain rods instead of a normal length clothes hanging rod. We are shopping at a surplus supply stores to find odds and ends that will make this project feasible and reasonably priced.

I always thought I was not handy in the slightest. Fibreglass roofing is my brother's trade and when I see him work, I almost feel like I'm not even the same species as him, let alone related! For most of my adult life I have been like most folks and paid the "experts" to do all those jobs I was sure I could not do. Then something amazing happened! The internet became popular and, like many, I found the instant access it offered to information was transformational in my life. The ability to research different tasks and skills in many different sources filled in all the experience I didn't have. The fact is, most jobs around the house do not really require much in the way of special skills, but instead hinge much more on special knowledge. That special knowledge is readily available on the internet from people with years of experience in a given field. So in the past 15 years or so, this "unhandy" guy has repaired his own washer and dryer, installed a new hot water heater, and remodeled his kitchen and two baths, doing all the plumbing, cutting laying granite and marble tile, installing built-in appliances and much, much more. All those years I thought I wasn't handy it turns out all I needed was the confidence and the advice that I found on-line! |

I've hired a couple of young workers to help with my oil tank removal service, and to start with, they were very indisciplined. I was very concerned when they'd turn up late, work slowly, and their general attitude was very poor. However, after a few weeks, I could see they were getting "into shape" and worked faster, turned up on time and as they got better at their job, they took much more pride in it. It shows that work itself can give a person discipline. Without work, people - and this is human nature - gradually lose their discipline and become lazier. I've learnt a lot from this. The main lesson for me is not to judge too harshly those who are unemployed. They are in a situation that is somewhat of a viscious circle. The less they work, the less discipline they have, and the harder it is for them to get back into work.

My old man bought me some dryline pro fixings for my birthday. I admitted to him that I didn't really know what to do with these. He replied: "get some shelves up to put all those books you collect!". I didn't know where to start. I'd never done any DIY before. Well, I got myself a drill and got to work. It ended up being much easier than I thought, and from that point on I really tore through my house with one DIY project after another. I've completely changed the place for the better. It's now a lot more organized and I've picked up a lot of skills along the way. I'm even considering learning some skills that I may use to make money from. I've always been an avid book reader so I'm researching more into the possibility of going self-employed and earning money from Do It Yourself. |
